Winter Day Energy Flow

Energy flow diagram of Harmony House during a winter day

1) Aero cap and wind tower reflect lowangle winter sun into high efficiency Velux skylight enhancing daylight penetration 2) Internal skylight transfers
daylight between rooms
3) Sunlight falling on Thermo Dynamics solar thermal collectors heats working fluid which transfers heat to 454 liter (120 gallon) storage tank. Working fluid moved by photovoltaic powered pump. 4) Sunlight falling on photovoltaic (solar electric) panels converted to electricity and fed into the electrical grid
5) Daylight sensors to control electric lighting and permit daylight harvesting 6) Sunlight entering through south facing windows falls on interior surfaces turning into heat, some of which is stored by interior finishes and structure and the rest of which heats the air. 7) Mitsubishi Zuba high efficiency air source heat pump forced air heating system provides backup heating and redistributes passive solar heat gains around house 8) 454 liter (120 gallon) super insulated solar hot water storage tank. Heat transferred from working fluid to tank by way of Thermo Dynamics Solar Boiler heat exchanger
9) 454 liter (120 gallon) super insulated backup storage tank heated by Mitsubishi heat pump water heater
